ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates the influence of the key principles of the initial gender action-learning approach well beyond the early efforts with BRAC staff. It describes the each phase represents gender quality action learning (GQAL) being modified, expanded and adjusted based on the BRAC methodology of piloting, evaluating and scaling up. The chapter shows the experimentation with GQAL as a 'stand-alone' programme and as a component that is 'mainstreamed' into other BRAC programmes. One of the distinguishing features of GQAL in the community is the investment in efforts rigorously to evaluate the impact of the initiatives. This reflects the overall results-oriented trend that was taking hold within the international development sector, which placed a high value on strong monitoring and evaluation systems; it is also indicative of BRAC's results orientation. The chapter concludes by locating GQAL within community methodology and broader research and development practice, particularly in relation to emerging approaches for working to change social norms.
