ABSTRACT

In the development of the Tinsley enterprise Edward Marston, had taken the lead. Certainly William Tinsley was not by now in any way lacking in enthusiasm for the business partnership with his brother. But he had followed the earlier example of Edward by allowing himself to be overtaken by enthusiasm for another kind of partnership, which made it easier or more appropriate for the younger boy to take the initiative in acquiring rights in an important new publication.. In 1859, Edward was writing for various journals, and William particularly remembered some book reviews: ‘He wrote a very laudatory notice of Henry Kingsley’s capital novel then just published, The Recollections of Geoffrey Hamlyn, and he also highly praised a novel called The Last of the Cavaliers. Edward was then aged twenty-one, and he described himself on his marriage certificate as a journalist.
