ABSTRACT

April 27. Off to Ibadan at 8:15 AM. My minister opened the Forest Products Research Laboratory. Some Eastern Region businessmen were present. All agreed the chipboard factory was a cockeyed idea. One said he had been asked to come in as a partner and refused. There was no market in Nigeria, and the European market was saturated. I asked about prefabs, which they now expect to make. The director of research, a Pole of German origin, said the houses would melt away in one rainy season. There might be a market in the Northern Region, but it would have to be built. The project was twenty years too soon.
