ABSTRACT

The European project was first formalised by the economy and freedom of trade (CECA, Communaute europ^enne du charbon et de l'acier, 1954, Euratom and common market in the Treaty of Rome 1957) and then enlarged from six members (France, Germany, Italy, Benelux) to nine (Denmark, Ireland, United Kingdom, 1972), then ten (Greece), twelve (Spain and Portugal 1986) and fifteen (Austria, Sweden, Finland, 1995), in parallel with a more political dimension (election of the European Parliament by universal suffrage 1975, Single European Act 1985, Maastricht 1992, Amsterdam 1997, Euro 1999).
