ABSTRACT

It can be said without fear of exaggeration that the split of Everton Football Club in 1892 represents one of the most important events in football history. It brought Everton into the modern era as a limited liability company and Liverpool FC into existence, and gave football one of its most enduring domestic rivalries. Given the importance of the Everton split for the future of the game, therefore, it is surprising that a dedicated and detailed investigation of this event has never been attempted.
