ABSTRACT

This chapter presents simulator-training results on more than 100 young drivers who have yet to receive their licence to drive. The training is administered on a PC-based system that includes presentation of drivers' education material, training and performance-scoring with a driving simulator, and subject login and data keeping. The driving simulation has been used in a wide range of research studies, and for clinical evaluation of driver capability. This young driver training application adds new system requirements, however, because it must run outside of the laboratory or clinic under the supervision of instructors who may not be familiar with computers, simulation, or clinical or research methodology in general. Training results are presented along with measures of simulator sickness and some practical experience gained in applying the training system in high schools.
