ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the elementary definitions and categories of justice, and illustrates what 'the cry for justice' and 'God's justice' are about by highlighting some Psalms themselves. Next, it distinguishes three spheres of relevance: the individual spiritual meaning of the Psalms and the prophets (the private sphere); their public importance for the welfare of all (the public sphere); and the possible influence of the prophetic ethos on the form of 'good governance' (the sphere of the polity). After this, a fourth sphere of relevance can be added, namely in respect of the biblical contribution to a peaceful and just global community; it is called as the sphere of international politics and global ethics. Furthermore, the chapter discusses the methodological approaches in religious education which promote a thoughtful discourse about texts like the Psalms without bracketing the dimension of truth claims.
