ABSTRACT

Dunaújváros is located on the Danube 70km south of Budapest. Like the other three towns it is in the western half of Hungary which is more favoured from the point of view of foreign investment. Within the western half however it is somewhat less favoured than the other three localities. This is partly because it is not on the major highway to Austria (and Germany), and partly because it is not on a through road in an east-west direction. It lies on the road south from Budapest to the provincial city of Pecs and then to the Slovenian border. Strangely, however, there is no bridge over the Danube within the town and traffic going in an east-west direction has to go 30km south to cross the Danube, or take a ferry. Thus on a national scale of attractiveness to investment Dunaújváros is in a better position than places in the east of Hungary but within the west of the country it occupies a somewhat worse position than the other localities in the study. However, more important than its geographical situation is its economic structure.
