ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the role of state government in social sectors. The statistical analysis as to whether the Kerala government’s expenditure on social sectors is more than that is expected of its gross state domestic product will help to evaluate the role of state government. Kerala has a good infrastructure for education, especially for schools. Accessibility has been a key factor in government intervention in health care provision in Kerala. The government of Kerala has made inroads into primary health care and the relatively better health indicators of Kerala could be attributed to the high expenditure on health and family welfare programmes. Total expenditure on medical and public health and per capita expenditure have been going up steadily in Kerala. Kerala’s social development process shows that regional disparities can be overcome within a single generation. The Public Distribution System in Kerala, the best among Indian states, provides basic nutritional support to its people.
