ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses factual and normative claims about treatment and objective status into revised compound positions. The factual position complements that element by asserting that the condition is fulfilled, that objective status is indeed equal. The chapter examines more closely the relationship between the factual and normative components of the compound position. The normative position asserts that treatment should be equal if objective status is equal. The factual position complements that assertion, affirming that objective status is indeed equal. The relationship between the factual and the normative components can then be represented in vertical syllogistic form. It takes on a somewhat inert character, as a non-essential premise, but is worth including insofar as it provides a means of noting the distinction between the claimant's factual and normative assertions about treatment. If theorists replace the conclusion line with a symbol separating the premises from the conclusion, they can dispense altogether with the vertical notation form.
