ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the effect of the project on subsequent migration from the area and considers the ongoing economic and social consequences of the mass migration to Britain and other parts of the world, on Mirpur. The topic of migration has generated three theoretical approaches: world systems theory, push and pull factors, and network theory. Each of these approaches has been utilised to develop an understanding of the presence of Black migrants in Britain. Saifullah Khan argue that the long history of migration from Mirpur and the specific connection of stokers on British Merchant Navy ships are the primary reasons for the mass migration of Mirpuris to Britain. The partition of the Indian sub-continent in 1947, nominally along religious grounds, led to division of three regions - the Punjab, Bengal and Kashmir. The chapter discusses the consequences of mass migration on Mirpur illustrate the reversal of this process and illustrates how the migrant network has structural effects on Mirpur/(Azad) Kashmir.
