ABSTRACT
This chapter briefly introduces the research cities. In a separate section for each city the following subjects will be dealt with: location and physical-spatial outlook; demography; economic base; regional function; and politics. Economically speaking, the growth of Vijayawada can be largely attributed to: its rich agricultural hinterland; and its strategic location in the national and regional road and railway networks. Moreover, the emergence of major industries, attracted professionals from all over India and investments in other economic activities. Traditionally, fishing has been an important local economic activity. There is a well-established fishing harbour allowing for the handling of large landings of fish. Although Visakhapatnam can be regarded as a regional centre, the linkages of its main economic sector (industry) with economic activities in the Visakhapatnam region are only weak. Politically speaking, Visakhapatnam is a relatively quiet and peaceful place.
