ABSTRACT

A figurative sculptor with an outstanding skill in traditional modelling techniques. He was trained at Newcastle School of Art, Staffordshire (1975-7), at North Staffordshire Polytechnic under Leslie Thornton (1977-80) and at the RA Schools under Willi Soukop and Bryan Kneale (1980-3). He was commissioned to restore the damaged plaster casts of the RA collection (1984-5). He received a Royal Doulton Sponsorship to study at the Sir Henry Doulton Sculpture School under Colin Melbourne and Elizabeth Frink, where he developed a range of prototype figures for Minton. In 1988 his Icarus was bought for Keele University. He was Development Sculptor for Royal Doulton (1988-90). In 1988 he demonstrated modelling methods from life at Keele University before a daily audience of students; the subject, Sadness, a standing female nude, had been commissioned by Bosworth Hall, Warwickshire. In 1990 he was commissioned to model the 180memorial statue of R.J. Mitchell, the aircraft designer, for the Hall of Aviation, Southampton. He has continued to develop ranges of classically inspired sculpture for Wedgwood and other ceramic factories, and also creates heads with fragmented sections in a manner which complements his realistic nude figures.
