ABSTRACT

THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS: MEANING AND APPLICATION IN THE AFRICAN CONTEXT

The protection of human values means that human rights must be freed from ad hoc, periodic or constant denial, curtailing, deprivation and other abuses and violations. They are rights and freedoms to which the individual and his/her community are entitled by virtue of the stipulations of the moral, natural, and international law of civilized nations. The individual and his/her society are entitled to a dignified status of life which demands and comprises universal recognition and unqualified protection of the welfare of humankind. The protection of human rights thus means unqualified and universal protection of the dignity of the human person in a just manner.
