ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by setting out some of the properties required for efficient organization. It describes possible organization options, together with their advantages and disadvantages. Communications across the various technical and professional disciplines are made easier when the project manager is in total command. The subject of project management organization can be introduced conveniently by considering the historical development of a small company. Street Components Limited has grown and has extended its product range. Street Components Limited has been forced to expand its design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities accordingly. If the organization is a multiproject matrix or a hybrid organization, the services group can be established as one of the departmental functions. In any matrix arrangement there may be scope for increasing the relative degree of authority given to the project managers. In the balanced matrix, there is a declared balance of power and authority between the project managers and the functional department managers.
