ABSTRACT

This chapter describes procedures and methods needed to implement project network analysis successfully. It describes several of the steps anticipate the use of a computer for time analysis, resource scheduling and reporting. Any temptation to assume that overtime will be worked should be avoided, and durations should not be estimated with overtime working in view. The task of the expert will be made easier if everyone present has received some training, and is able to grasp the meaning of the network as it grows. Once a unit of duration has been decided, the same unit should be used throughout the network. Arrow notation is best suited to the brainstorming purpose, because it can be sketched far more quickly than a precedence diagram. Brainstorming is probably the best approach for any new project because it can combine the thoughts of the best available minds. Interfaces should only be allowed for true logical links.
