ABSTRACT
The following chapters will discuss adolescents’ personal future orientaI tion in Finland and Russia. Different aspects of personal future orientation will be described in various frameworks. The basic theoretical concept for the future orientation part of this research project has been a cognitivemotivational construct, which is divided, by Nurmi (1989a), into three processes: motivation, planning, and evaluation. According to Nurmi, motivation refers to interests concerning future life, planning refers to how people plan to realize their interests and evaluation refers to the extent to which these interests will be completed.
