ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the state of corporate community involvement in the city of St Louis, or more accurately, the St Louis region. It reviews the various intermediary organisations that deal with the public interests of the private sector. The chapter concentrates on the social involvement of some active companies established in St Louis: energy producer Ameren UE, Bank of America, and deliverer of postal services United Parcel Services. In St Louis, the Metropolitan Association for Philanthropy - the regional association of 'grantmakers' - plays a prominent part in philanthropy. Participation in Civic Progress is useful for the company, but also for the CEO himself, who in this way gives substance to his personal social commitment. The companies are in favour of checking further deconcentration - urban sprawl - by investing more in the inner city. Among the most interesting projects aimed at sustainable urban development are the Inner City Competitive Assessment and Strategy Project.
