ABSTRACT

From the latter half of the 20th century through the 21st century, one of the most successful management tools is the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). It is a strategic management tool developed by Kaplan and Norton and enables companies to fully implement a formulated business strategy. BSC is constructed with the Strategy Map and Scorecard. The Strategy Map has strategic objectives that show the path to execute a strategy. The Scorecard has measures, targets, and strategic initiatives to implement strategic objectives. The Balanced Scorecard is a strategic management tool to implement a formulated strategy and sometimes to fine-tune or improve this strategy. Based on the business strategy, organizations can decide the strategic objectives, build the logic of strategy execution, and translate business strategies into action. In Japan, the percentage of the companies that use BSC is small. It is related to Japanese traditional management ideas and tools, especially Hoshin-Kanri.
