ABSTRACT

Revolutionary syndicalism contributed to the attempt to define an ideal society a conception of the dominating rôle which might be played by the labour unions— a conception which will certainly not be passed over by a mature science of revolution. Revolutionary syndicalism made utopian thinking seem more plausible to practical minds by associating it with references to actually existing working-class organizations, and by emphasizing the principal action which these organizations will naturally take in a revotionary crisis. It is highly desirable to reconcile anarcho-syndicalism with Marxism— or rather to reconcile anarchists and syndicalists to the practical science that is concealed in Marxism. It will be accomplished by recognizing that each has over-emphasized one part of a complete act of practical intelligence to the neglect of the other part. The anarchists have neglected to define the unalterable element in the facts, and formulate the method of procedure compatible with its continued existence.
