ABSTRACT

Evidence from studies indicates that pupils can be helped to benefit from home learning and personal study as a means of developing their autonomy. This chapter looks at the values of agreeing with colleagues how teachers will approach pupils' home learning and finding out what pupils and their parents think about home learning. Different kinds of home-learning activities and their purposes are explored. A guide to reviewing and developing policy and practice is presented. Home learning includes study at home, practice, projects and revision out of normal school time. It is good to be clear whether any home learning activity is to: continue or complete work that is prompted by activities in recent lessons; prepare and inform activities in lessons to come; and promote study habits and qualities that lead to success in school and beyond. Agreeing with colleagues how to approach home learning and personal study is likely to strengthen your teaching and help pupils become effective, independent learners.
