ABSTRACT

This chapter provides examples of different kinds of lesson visiting and their potential benefits. Visiting lessons can enable teachers and their colleagues to share experiences and perceptions. It is one of the most direct ways of promoting morale and job satisfaction, while also potentially informing shared agendas for development. Because a variety of functions is served by lesson visits, it is important to develop and update protocols so that everyone can understand purposes, boundaries, responsibilities and consequences. All observed lessons are confidential but, with the permission of the host teacher, notes and records can be stored and shared with others, for example, for purposes of ongoing professional development or external accountability. The time and place for feedback are agreed and arranged for as soon after the lesson or event as is convenient for both teacher and visitors. The host teacher gives observers a brief plan and background notes for the lesson or event.
