ABSTRACT
The subject of individual differences has numerous applications in the context of reading and learning to read. Individuals differ in their reading ability, both with respect to decoding and in understanding what may have been accurately decoded. Differences in reading performance may be due to inequalities of general and fundamental mental abilities, of one or many of the component skills specific to reading, of environmental influences, of personality, of motivation, and of varying combinations of these and many other factors. Furthermore, individuals of comparable ability may differ in their style of reading, again for many possible reasons.
