ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains the process standards established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and four content chapters: number sense; patterns and number relationships; measurement; and geometry. It includes several children’s literature books and hands-on manipulative materials that can be used to facilitate the process standards as well as promote mathematical concepts. The book is intended for teachers of young children with varying abilities, as well as children who are learning English. It includes examples of developmentally appropriate vocabulary that correspond with the mathematical concepts. Professionals who work with children in preschool should be engaging children in stimulating mathematical practices on a daily basis. Before teachers design learning for young children, they need to collect data from multiple sources in order to make decisions regarding learning targets and objectives.
