ABSTRACT

Numbers are ever present in the daily routines of young children. In order to make sense of counting, young children use movement, hands-on materials, and pictures to display their understanding of these mathematical concepts, including marks or drawings to represent a quantity. Children can be exposed to numbers in written and spoken form, in English and in their home language. Children should count objects and people in their environment and be exposed to numbers in various settings, such as symbols that may appear outside the building, outside a classroom, or on signage in the environment. The vocabulary related to number sense includes: more, less, same, equal, just one, one more. In order to practice number sense in the community, encourage families to visit different parks and playgrounds in their neighborhood. Families should be included in planning family workshops that reinforce number sense.
