ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines an effective process in identifying and setting instructional goals for students with complex communication needs (CCN). It offers a structure for Individualized Educational Program (IEP) teams to use to ensure that goals are set accurately, and that they are written in an observable and measurable manner. Effective communication and documentation of the consultation services is critical as families may request consulting reports from the service providers. The focus of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)-related goals should be on language and communication development, which has a direct impact on academic skills, participation, independence, and social skills. The purpose of implementing AAC strategies and using AAC systems is to address the communication needs of students who are unable to functionally communicate through conventional methods such as spoken language. Identification of opportunity barriers is a challenging and time-consuming process. Monitoring the student's progress on annual IEP goals will greatly depend on the specific goal, the student, and the setting.
