ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the importance of identifying and implementing an unaided system as part of the student's communication modalities. It discusses unaided communication systems. There many ways for an individual to communicate using an unaided communication system. These means can be categorized into four main types of unaided communication systems: vocalizations, gestures, eye gaze, and manual signs. Vocalizations can be observed early in the child's life and become more sophisticated as the child develops, turning into words. Gestures refer to hand and body movements, facial expressions, and body language that are intentionally conducted with the purpose of communicating something to the communication partner. Eye gaze refers to the individual's ability to use his or her eye gaze intentionally to point by looking at an object long enough to indicate communicative intent. The purpose of the Unaided Feature Matching Screening Form is to identify and outline the student's motor control and communication abilities.
