ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces our book, outlines its purpose and explains some of the overarching issues that inform Western news media reportage of stories about Muslims. It provides an outline of a model developed to address problematic mainstream Western news media coverage of stories about Muslims and their faith. That model was developed over the course of a four-year project called the Reporting Islam Project. This is a multi-year nationally competitively funded Australian project, designed to provide resources and training to journalists, journalism educators and students in order to assist them towards more informed reporting of stories involving Muslims and Islam.
