ABSTRACT

Aviation is heavily influenced by environmental conditions. Uncontrollable natural forces, as simple as temperature and the movement of air, have a direct impact on the efficiency and economics of air travel. Weather refers to the short-term environmental conditions on a specific day that can change quickly, while climate can be thought of as an average of the weather conditions over a longer period. Developing international law to protect the environment is complicated. The International Court of Justice describes a general obligation of States to respect the environment of other States; however, there is no global governing body on environmental issues and it has been difficult to get all the countries of the world in agreement. The chapter explains environmental protection initiatives such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO's) initiatives for carbon neutral growth from 2020, and ICAO’s carbon offsetting and reduction scheme for international aviation.
