ABSTRACT
The discussion on the dynamic interactions among political arrangements for China’s transition constitutes the basic focus of the book. In my study, development strategy, political institutions, and market institutions have been treated both as explicandums (the phenomenon to be explained) and the explicans (the factors accounting for explicandum) as the context of research varies. First, by focusing on political and economic institutions and their legacies, I explained why and how the developmental state strategy was adopted and adapted in China. The targeted goals for the economy and the path-dependent constraints arising from the political context constituted the framework for the changes of the development strategy. Through interactions with the international environment, Chinese leaders experimented with different strategies and finally settled on the East Asian developmental state model. However, there were substantial modifications due to China’s vastness and the legacy of state socialism.
