ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 focuses on fear. It begins with the science of fear, exploring what fear is and its functions. Next, the fear trap is outlined, a simple but powerful cognitive-behavioural formulation for almost all fear-based presentations, which builds on the understanding of fear outlined in the first part of the chapter. The formulation is described in detail, paying particular attention to the links between the elements to ensure high levels of understanding and clarity. The fear trap is then used to outline the processes of intervention when working with fear-based presentations. Case examples are used to illustrate this process. The end of the chapter provides examples of how the fear trap can be used with a variety of different difficulties with fear. The last section highlights the ways in which the evidence base informs the recommendations of the chapter.
