ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the motor learning to discuss a number of important concepts, based on scientific findings, which play a role when giving instructions in practice. In the verbal-cognitive learning phase, one learns rules about the movement execution through verbal instruction. The classical way of thinking is that the road to automatic movement performance goes from the cognitive learning phase to the associative and autonomous learning phase, which is similar to a shift from explicit to implicit knowledge that is used for movement execution. The chapter explains some rules of thumb about the learning process that can be used in practice. Different scientific studies show the positive effects of imitation learning when using videos that show the desired performance of a movement. More recently, this theory has received more attention due to the discovery of the so-called mirror neurons in the brain.
