ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a brief review of literature and theoretical frame of reference to explain the issues under study. Most importantly, it narrates issues of personal dimensions in conducting refugee research in detention centres. It also examines the experiences that could influence the decisions to explore further for conceptual and methodological clarity in doing anthropological fieldwork. A number of typologies and analytical frames are reviewed in this chapter. During the initial preparation of the data collection, much emphasis was placed on Berry’s (1991) theory o f ‘refugee integration’. However, when the data started accumulating, many issues were beyond the explanations of an ‘integration approach’.
