ABSTRACT

In early November 1970, shortly after Tall's appointment, incidents involving an exchange of fire between the Fida'iyyun and the Jordanian security forces increased, particularly in Amman. On 2 January 1971, Wasfi al-Tall appeared before the Chamber of Deputies to obtain a vote of confidence in his government. His policy statement was similar in style and content to his statements at his news conference of 7 November 1970. Tall's determination to restabilize the country and to ensure government control was naturally detrimental to those of dubious loyalty to the regime. During Tall's last term of office as Prime Minister there was rumour and conjecture about friction between him and Husayn, particularly in regard to Jordan's policy towards the Fida'iyyun. The prolonged presence of the Fida'iyyun in Jordan had left its mark on all walks of life. Concurrent with their gradual eviction, the Tall government made a concerted effort to restore the Jordanian state to its traditional form.
