ABSTRACT

The activities of shipping and port agencies in communist Poland were allotted to two enterprises - Morska Agencja w Gdyni and Morska Agencja w Szczecin (MAG and MAS). MAG was formed in 1951 by the relatively new communist government and from that date continually expanded its activities. For representing foreign shipping lines, MAG played a substantial part if only because at this time, 80" of all goods moving through Polish ports were carried by foreign shipping lines and MAG had responsibility for them all in the Gdynia area. Direct cargo connections were available on 18 routes, or with transhipment in base ports on the continent or on through bills of lading in Scandinavia. In 1963, MAG took on responsibility for clearing vessels at Darlowo as well as Gdynia and Gdansk. The vessels cleared came from 39 different countries, and the larger consignments were particularly associated with coal exports to Europe and Japan and imports of grain, ores and other minerals.
