ABSTRACT

The need for research into maritime issues arose with the development of the Polish economy in the post-war period. Upon assuming power in 1950, the communists founded a new Technical Maritime Institute which was merged within the year with the Polish Baltic Institute to form the Instytut Morski. The Instytut Morski was the sole special research institution of its type, responsible to the Ministry of Shipping and located within the 'Golden House' in the central street of Gdansk where there were laboratories, workshops, offices and a printing house. The work of the Instytut was directed towards the needs of shipowners, port authorities, fisheries and the Ministry. In 1965, the Instytut was reorganised to reflect the changing requirements of the maritime economy in Poland. Co-operation between the Instytut and representatives of the research community from Cuba expanded considerably in 1974. The Instytut retained its links with Bremen, Moscow, Leningrad, Rostock, Alexandria and Warsaw.
