ABSTRACT

Food security is a major strategic issue that affects China's economic and social development in every way. After taking a look back at the dynamic nature of changes in China's grain and food production, this chapter analyzes the situation in 2020 in terms of both food security and food safety. It bases this analysis on the existing domestic, as well as international situation in supply and demand, and on China's current food safety situation. Results indicate that China's supply and demand situation for grain and foods will show that China's self-sufficiency in grain will continue to decline. With the exception of oil made from soybeans, the production of other edible oils will roughly keep pace with demand, with only a modestly increasing gap. The consumption of animal and aquatic products will continue to increase rapidly, but for most products, supply and demand will be roughly in balance.
