ABSTRACT

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) central task is to produce United Kingdom (UK) defence policy and then to direct the generation of military capabilities that support the delivery of that policy. A contrasting view underlines that the MoD is responsible for 'producing' things and not just 'using' things. It would be difficult to exaggerate the dependence of UK defence on suppliers in the private sector, where the MoD spends more than half of its money. So, within the MoD, elemental challenge facing decision-makers have to decide whether they are consumers or producers of defence capabilities. How defence as an enterprise answers this question is its 'analogue or digital' moment. The components of defence extended enterprise need to be mapped and managed effectively if defence is to be assured. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
