ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 contains the application of the theoretical framework of the Critical Environmental Security Studies (CESS), elaborated in Chapter 3 to the analysis of ENVSEC programmes and policies. In other words, the analytical concept of environmental security is used as a tool to interpret ENVSEC’s underlying conception of environmental security and compare it to the established concepts in CESS. The result of this analytical exercise allows a deeper understanding of the values and contents of the discourses, and reveals that the underlying conception differs clearly from the conception transmitted by ENVSEC in its published documents. Finally, as a practical value deriving from this case study, some new insights are formulated and reflect on some challenges related to both the theory on the environmental security concept and to its practical applications. One of the insights is that the ENVSEC conception of environmental security is defined as a mainstream approach.
