ABSTRACT

Transportation systems in the Asia Pacific region face challenges as providers try to keep pace with the fast growing economies. This chapter discusses the issues of capacity and operational efficiency of airports and air traffic control systems in the context of liberalizing air transport systems in the region, and in the context of building efficient passenger and cargo hubs. Air space congestion has been identified as a major issue of concern to the international carriers and the most serious threat to the growth of traffic movement in the region. Efficient and effective logistics systems facilitate inter-and intra-regional trade, encourage economic development, and influence the spatial patterns of economic activity. For developing a logistics hub involving an airport, it is essential to have deregulated domestic air transport markets and fairly liberal bilateral agreements with foreign countries, especially neighbouring countries. Information is the key to an effective management of the total logistics chain.
