ABSTRACT

The four English local studies on environmental impact assessment were located in the west of the country in and near the cities of Bath and Bristol. In EIA terms, the two studies in or near Bath proved to be controversial, whilst the other two, to the north west and north east of Bristol, were not. One of the two controversial developments was a big project in terms of national impact. The other was mainly of regional and local importance. This pattern was repeated for the two uncontroversial projects.
