ABSTRACT

Beer is consumed according to a strict code and an elaborate etiquette, which is associated with both distribution and consumption. Before a beer-drink commences the host apportions the beer amongst the various barrels and/or pots available, according to the various allocations that are going to be made. Beer for other kinds of work party is handled according to the nature of the work done, with the major allocation going to the workers. Certain beakers are given out in the course of the work itself, by the homestead head. Many beer drinks are brewed for a specific purpose and named accordingly. All beer-drinks are religious in the sense that the ancestors are thought to want their descendants to brew and to partake of beer in spirit, and some have a specifically religious motive. The main purpose of this beer drink is to give thanks to the ancestors for the harvest received and to ensure that the following harvest as good.
