ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to identify the bases and motivations of Italian socioeconomic consensus to the final goal of economic and monetary union (EMU). The association representing the interests of the Italian banking sector, the Italian Banking Association will be taken as a point of reference to identify the changes of the position of the Italian banking community towards the issue of EMU. However, a more significant indicator of the impact of the devaluation of the lira on the Italian industrial system is, without doubt, represented by the performance of exports. The chapter examines whether and how the events of 1992– changed the attitude of Italian economic groups towards the establishment of EMU. Emilio Gabaglio, then Confederal Secretary of the CISL, also insisted on some conditions that it was necessary to fulfil to give some substance to the social dimension of Europe.
