ABSTRACT

The Raphael Hospital is a unique, independent hospital, specialising in the neuro-rehabilitation of adults. Allen Paul was admitted to the Raphael Hospital in August 2012 and remains an inpatient at the time of writing. Throughout his stay, and to this day, and in addition to medical and nursing care, he receives physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, neuropsychology, external applications including rhythmical massage and embrocations, art therapy and music therapy. Paul's Speech and language therapy treatment includes Neuro Functional Reorganisational Therapy to improve the oral movements and control to aid in the initial stages of swallowing. This therapy is based on the neurophysiological development of humans and takes people through the various developmental stages. The physiotherapy team worked jointly with the nursing team to monitor the status of Paul's lungs and provided prompt intervention if needed. His physiotherapy sessions included chest physiotherapy, standing on the tilt table for weight bearing with cuff deflation, facial muscle exercise and voice synchronisation.
