ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides the concept of the security dilemma to reveal the possibility of transcending those social structures that, according to the Realist dominated discipline of traditional Security Studies, condemns social groupings to live in permanent conflict. It proposes a new definition of the security dilemma that embraces the idealism without denying reality. The book explores the possibilities of transcending the security dilemma and creating the conditions for an enduring peace. It looks at three dimensions of that policy: the military, the political and the economic dimension. The book highlights practical ways of moving beyond the security dilemma and towards a security community where uncertainty is removed because war is unthinkable and there are dependable expectations of peaceful change. It identifies social practices that create peace.
