ABSTRACT

The Bi-adaptive model posits an overlap between mental illness and criminalness within a person. This is supported by shared problems between criminalness and mental illness. Changing Lives and Changing Outcomes (CLCO) includes a comprehensive and structured treatment manual that provides clinicians a guide for treating criminal justice involved persons with mental illness (CJ-PMI). CLCO offers a treatment plan for each session with specific structured exercises for both in-group and out-of-group work designed to teach objectives each session. The program incorporates psychosocial rehabilitation and Risk-Need-Responsivity models, cognitive-behavioral theory, and a social learning paradigm to facilitate change. CLCO includes nine therapeutic modules delivered in 76 sessions. Each module targets a specific problem or concern for CJ-PMI. They are: preparing for change module, mental illness and criminalness awareness module, thoughts and attitudes module, medication adherence module, coping with mental illness and criminalness module, emotions management module, associates module, community skills development module, and substance abuse module.
