ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Associates treatment module which employs social-cognitive learning theory as the theoretical underpinning to explain and change antisocial behavior. The "Associates" module focuses on building the motivation to change, on creating and maintaining prosocial relationships, on distancing participants from their current criminal associations, and on THE Associates Plan for building a prosocial network which is their relapse prevention plan. This module focuses on creating and maintaining prosocial relationships. The module provides strategies for distancing the criminal justice involved persons with mental illness (CJ-PMI) from antisocial others. These include consideration of living arrangements, employment opportunities, and accounting for all of their time in prosocial pursuits. Finally the module helps the participant develop "THE Associates Plan". This includes designing a plan that includes both the positive movement toward prosocial others and the withdrawal from antisocial others. The "Associates" module includes 10 sessions to help participants identify negative social influences, develop social skills, and build a prosocial network of associates.
