ABSTRACT

This chapter describes various types of collaboration that occur in project-based learning environments. It also describes how to help children learn skills needed to work in collaborative groups. The chapter explores the nature of collaboration in project-based learning (PBL), why it frequently works better than individual learning, and how it helps students engage in science much like scientists do in their careers. It focuses on how to create a collaborative environment over time. The chapter also explores how technology tools can enhance collaboration and help manage collaborative work. It provides a discussion of ways to overcome challenges that might arise in the implementing of collaborative groups. Think of collaboration as a joint intellectual effort of students, peers, teachers, and community members to investigate a question or problem. When students work with others on a joint intellectual effort to explore a problem and to build understanding, they form a community of learners.
