ABSTRACT

The averages which have been used in various tables and in grading streets for the purpose of colouring are but useful abbreviations for the purpose of describing and comparing diverse quantitative data, and their full meaning can be appreciated only in relation to the raw material out of which they are made. The character of the information available has been explained in the text. The following examples, which summarize some of it, will give an indication of the facts which various street colours represent. The entry, “two families,” or “three families” means that the house is shared by families with dependent children. There are houses shared with childless families or single persons, but no record was made of these.
