ABSTRACT

It is quite certain that, at the time, Lenin received no money from the extremely parsimonious Austrian government, itself devoid of funds for such operations. The Bolshevik legal press in Russia was permitted to engage in extensive propaganda, but the party papers were not self-supporting. Now Lenin, was provided with an opportunity to display his journalistic talents. During December 1912 the Central Committee met at Cracow. The police department reported secretly on April 10, 1913, that personnel changes were made in Pravda and the danger of police infiltration was discussed. While Krupskaya was in the hospital, Lenin travelled through Swiss towns, where he spoke on the national question. In her memoirs, Krupskaya went to great pains to suggest that Inessa's affair with Lenin had terminated. Actually, Inessa's abundant energies, together with those of sister Anna Yelizarova, were used to produce Rabotnitsa, a magazine for female revolutionaries. Lenin had put Stalin to work on the national question.
